"A rose-red city half as old as time."

About This Safari
Petra, the "Rose of the Desert" of Jordan, listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, crossroads of East and West, North and South, on the caravan routes from Arabia, Syria and Mesopotamia: a city carved in stone by the Nabataeans. This people, originally from Arabia, settled in Petra in the 5th century BC and over six centuries carved more than 700 monuments in the rocks, across an area spanning several kilometres. Petra was named by the Romans "Petrum" meaning rock, but its first name was "Reqmu" meaning multicoloured.
Petra, one of the most magical sites in the Middle East, is both a natural and architectural wonder. Natural first, with its gorges like the Siq, and its sandstone cliffs with coloured patterns — where the jagged rocks, shaped by wind and sand, give the site its extraordinary palette of colours ranging from yellow to violet through orange, red, green and blue. Architectural too, with its Roman remains, but above all with its imposing tombs, dug and sculpted into the mountain rocks by the Nabataeans.
